After spending thirty years in the corporate sector, Pratap SJB Rana succumbed to
the call of his heart and chose to put brush to canvas. His works display an eclectic
style that reflects his wonderful syncretic sensibility. Influenced by his origins in
Nepal, tenures across South East Asia and Sri Lanka, and extensive travels, Pratap's
works are contemporary, transcending borders, languages, religions and traditions.
Through a combination of richness in colour and texture, and spread over a wide
spectrum of thematic interpretations, his resulting works transform standard
notions of realism into uniquely expressive forms of impactful abstractions and
figuratives. Pratap is clearly a thinking artist who paints from the heart which brings
a freshness to each canvas.
Represented by a number of galleries, Pratap’s works are much sought after and
now a part of private collections of prominent collectors in India and abroad.

Pratap currently lives and works in Gurgaon, India.

Dev Bhoomi III 

Dev Bhoomi is the fascinating land where the the Gods and Godesses reside. A land where the Sun God rides his chariot, where the Trinity reside, and where the Bow of Indra provides an ethereal backdrop. It is a land where the rivers flow with milk like the white waters of the Ganga, beside which the Goddesses feed on Ambrosia and nectar is their wine. The air is scented with the fragrance of Jasmine and the paths strewn with love. This is where the sacred mountain, Sumeru exists in all its glory. This is that land where mortals would aspire to enter like Yudhishthir and his faithful dog had, only to be pulled down by the burden of their sins just as Draupadi and the four Pandavas were. This 'kalpana' of Dev Bhumi is what the Artist attempts to translate onto his canvas.

Keshav

Mythology is fascinating. This work is based on  the Hindu God Krishna and his battles against his evil uncle Kansa, who unleashes demonic forces to terminate the young Krishna. In this instance Kansa  finally assigns the demon Keshi who assumes the form of a huge horse. Keshi gallops at the speed of thought, wears the earth with his hooves and scatters celestial vehicles and clouds in the sky with his mane  in search of Krishna. Krishna challenges Keshi to a duel, as they engage in battle, Keshi roars like a lion strikes with his hooves, opens his mouth and attacks Krishna who thrusts his arm  into Keshi's mouth, and chokes him to death. 

 The work depicts this epic battle with the evil Kansa in the top left window and the contrasting tranquil form of a cow in the bottom right. It is also believed that while "Keshav" is widely used to refer to lord Vishnu, It applies to Krishna ( an avatar of Vishnu) as he had slain Keshi. Interestingly, Keshighat is a major bathing ghat on the river Yamuna in Vrindavan, where Krishna is believed to have overpowered Keshi. It is also believed that Keshi represents doubts that run like wild horses in the mind and hence need to be conquered.

 Rudrani VI

Rudrani is Shakti and the consort of Rudra (Shiva). She later came to be identified as a manifestation of Durga. Rudrani is considered to be the confluence of the power of all goddesses. On an appeal from the Gods and armed by them she battled and vanquished the evil forces represented by Mahishasur the demon who appeared in several forms ( including that of a buffalo). Interestingly it may be observed that "Durga" in Sanskrit means a fort and the significance of this title to the Mother Goddess indicates that she protects her devotees just as a fort protects a kingdom. 

This work is inspired by 1) Dassain / Durga Pooja and 2) the #metoo movement. In the work the artist has left one hand free of any weapons thus emphasising that Rudrani can also clearly battle on her own strength without several weapons and help being provided by the Gods. The work hence speaks of woman empowerment.

The work has been inspired by the well known incident in the epic Ramayana when the female protagonist, Sita, (in a classic dance pose of anguish and also depicted here by the " the plough") is persuaded by the antagonist Ravana (asking for "bhiksha" as the alms bowl in the work), to cross the line drawn by Lakshmana, depicted by the footprint across the line, thereby leading to the escalation of the epic to it's climax. The work also depicts the kidnapping of Sita. The horse is representative of the infamous "Apaharan". Also visible is the golden deer of temptation. To the artist the crossing of the line by Sita is a point of inflection and has substantial social relevance even today.

The work has been inspired by the well known incident in the epic Ramayana when the female protagonist, Sita, (right hand in 'abhaya' mudra of fearlessness and left indicating charity or compassion. She is also depicted here by the " the plough" and the Lotus) is persuaded by the antagonist Ravana (asking for "bhiksha" as the alms bowl in the work), to cross the line drawn by Lakshmana, depicted by the footprint across the line, thereby leading to the escalation of the epic to it's climax. The work also depicts the kidnapping of Sita. The horse is representative of the infamous "Apaharan". Also visible is the golden deer of temptation, and in the background is the Shesh Naag (interesting in mythological continuity Ram is the Avatar of Vishnu , who is always protected by the Shesh Naag hence representing Lakshman, and who is the Avatar of the Shesh Naag)

To the artist the crossing of the line by Sita is a point of inflection and has substantial social relevance even today.

Dashavatara VI

As per Hindu Mythology, whenever the world has been threatened with disorder, evil and destructive forces, The Preserver among the Holy Trinity, Lord Vishnu has taken on various incarnations or avatars to restore cosmic order. Dashavatara refers to the ten primary incarnations of Vishnu that descended during times of chaos in each of the four Yugas or age in time. As per Puranic astronomical estimates together, these four yugas constitute one Mahayuga and equal 4.32 million human years. Interestingly the incarnations vary across regions and different sects of Hinduism and hence no list is bereft of controversy but importantly all believe in the essence of Dashavtara.

Fascinated by this concept the artist was moved to represent the mythology on canvas.

The Caretaker
The work is inspired by the bond and interdependence between the caretaker or guardian and the ward. The artist came across a heart warming scene in rural India where an old man, who seemed lonely and in penury, was lovingly taking care of a kid goat. However, it seemed obvious to the artist that it was the kid goat that was in actuality responsible for the wellness of it's guardian.

Kendrit II

'Kendrit' means 'Focused'. It is often thought that the goal of meditation is to empty the mind. However It's not about "emptying" the mind; it's about focusing on a single focal point or an object that could be physical or mental. When the mind wanders, harnessing it and refocusing is achieved through meditation till the mind is totally absorbed to the exclusion of all  distractions. 

The monochromatic theme of the work signifies this exclusion of distractions, hence no colours that distract. It signifies the simplicity, purity and purpose of meditation. It is 'Kendrit'

We all occasionally experience this state spontaneously when for instance listening to a favourite piece of music or being engrossed in the arts. This focus is the key to a change in experiencing life and relating to others around us.

Nandana - The Celestial Garden

The work is a result of the artist being Impressed by the mythology of the celestial Garden of the Hindu God Indra called Nandana . It is also the home to the Kalpavriksha, the wish-granting tree and the sweet-scented Parijata flower. The garden is said to be closely guarded by the young, beautiful and elegant apsaras or Celestial heavenly dancers. 

The work is an imaginative interpretation of this pleasure garden of unmatched beauty.

Seeking Harmony 

Inspired by the auspicious elements of Buddhism the  artist has created this composition with a sense of synchronization of movement. 

The golden swirling clouds of abundance; the flight of the Black Necked Crane, a welcome winter visitor to the Land of the Thunder Dragon, and a symbol of longevity; the supple, curved figure of the majestic Tiger, a Buddhist symbol of strength; the lush foliage signifying fertility; and the lapping  waves of life giving water, all forming a dance of joy for those Seeking Harmony in the turbulence of Life.

 Ashtamangala

In India belief in auspicious objects has existed from ancient times and has been prevalent across Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism.

Mangala means that which is pure and sacred and that which possesses the power to ward off all evil. In this work the artist attempts to capture the essence of The set of Eight auspicious symbols of good fortune, the 'ashtamangala', which in Buddhism represent the offerings made by the God's to the Buddha (Shakyamuni) on his gaining Enlightenment. The hand in 'gyana' mudra in the centre represents the Buddha Himself.

There are several interpretations of each symbol. Some of which are:

1.The Conch represents that all pervasive deep peaceful sound of Buddhadharma, signifying the awakening of the believers from Ignorance. Interestingly in Hinduism the Conch is attributed to Vishnu who's avatar it is also believed is Shakyamuni Buddha.

2.The eternal knot represents the never ending deep Wisdom and Compassion of The Buddha  

3.The pair of golden fish symbolize Happiness represented by the complete spontaneity, fearlessness and freedom of movement of the fish in the water. Some connect the pair with the sacred rivers, the Ganga and the Yamuna

4.The Lotus Flower (Padma) represents purity of the body, speech, and mind. Just as the Lotus floats above the muddy waters of desire and material greed

5.The jewelled parasol or Sacred Umbrella, represents Refuge from harm and suffering under the protection of Dharma  

6.The Treasure Vase represents health, longevity, wealth, prosperity, wisdom, 

7. The Wheel. Believed to be The wheel of life, The Bhavachakra, and a symbolic representation of the cycle of existence as Buddhists believe in the continuous cycle of birth, life, death. Some also believe it to be the Dharmachakra, with the round shape of the wheel, representing the perfection of the dharma, the Buddha's teaching

8.The Victory Banner or Dhvaja, usually known as a military standard, represents The Buddha's victory over Mara, the Lord of Illusion, or the four hindrances in his path to Enlightenment.

Bhiksham Dehi XI 
The alms bowl refers to the time in the Buddha’s life just before he attained enlightenment, when a young girl, named Sujata offered the Buddha a bowl of milk rice. Although the Buddha was practising austerity and eating only a little food at a time, he realised that to achieve the final stages of enlightenment, he would need to partake the offering of rice from Sujata. After partaking of the meal, the Buddha then threw away a small amount of food left in that bowl to symbolise non-attachment to material possessions. Another legend tells the story that the Buddha threw away the begging bowl itself into the river to symbolise this non-attachment.

Sentinels of the Sacred Gate
The bull, is of significance in many ancient cultures. In Buddhism The Bull represents "desire" during the life of the Buddha as a prince. Amongst the Jains The bull is the emblem of Adinath, the first Jain Tirthankara. In Greek mythology it is a symbol of male sexuality, illustrated by Zeus, in the form of a white bull, unrelentingly pursuing Europa.

Within Hinduism, the bull is best known as Nandi, the sacred steed of Shiva and is depicted as a powerful white bull. The white colour is a symbol of purity and devotion. Nandi is regarded as the gatekeeper and protector of Shiva as well as Shiva’s consort the Hindu Goddess Parvati and It is believed that one must first gain the approval of Nandi before being allowed to worship Lord Shiva.

A Time To Reflect II
Though tea in itself  as a beverage has proven health benefits, to the artist it is the ritual of  "sitting down to tea" which has great significance. The very act of drinking  tea on one's own has  meditative implications. With friends, it is the very joy of life and at the center of socializing. On a rainy, cold day the act evokes nostalgia of a childhood  in the hills, and in a negotiation, it is the bridge to a mutually  beneficial  arrangement. 

Numerous scholars state that it holds significance when examining the notion of purity. Murata Shuko, a priest in the 14th century propounded that four values were central to the concept of the tea ritual: reverence, respect, purity, and tranquility.

Kochi II

The historical, quaint, town of Kochi is an immersion of the senses. Its legacy of a trading centre of spice, its exotic mix of Jewish, Arabic, Chinese, Indian, Portuguese & other European cultures, its heritage buildings, backwaters and open seas and the flavours of its cuisine simply excites the senses as no other. A short sojourn here has inspired the artist to create this series that attempts to capture the very essence of this fascinating township. The works express the sheer joie de vivre of Kochi.

Kochi III
The historical, quaint, town of Kochi is an immersion of the senses. Dhyana XII
In the work, the artist depicts the swirling random movement of the mind and uncontrolled circumstances that surround us, every moment, often dictating our actions. Thus we react to all that we are surrounded by and enveloped in. The monk is also therefore in a similar situation but appears to emerge out of it, retaining his serenity which is reflected by his posture. This retention of calmness in a tumultuous environment is achieved through Dhyana, the practice of mind control by which we stop all thinking and seek to realize Truth in its essence. Of the many different paths to Nirvana, the most important one  is the path of Dhyana, the practice of “stopping and realizing.”

The Harmony of Seasons I
Having spent extensive periods of  contemplative time at different seasons in Warsaw's Łazienki Park. The artist is fascinated by the peace and beauty. The work captures the transition from summer to the onset of winter when the colorful birds set off to warmer climes. The bench signifies the peace of solitude inviting the viewer to pause and rest a while, taking time to observe the beauty that surrounds us.

Dashavatara V

As per Hindu Mythology, whenever the world has been threatened with disorder, evil and destructive forces, The Preserver among the Holy Trinity, Lord Vishnu has taken on various incarnations or avatars to restore cosmic order. Dashavatara refers to the ten primary incarnations of Vishnu that descended during times of chaos in each of the four Yugas or age in time. As per Puranic astronomical estimates together, these four yugas constitute one Mahayuga and equal 4.32 million human years. Interestingly the incarnations vary across regions and different sects of Hinduism and hence no list is bereft of controversy but importantly all believe in the essence of Dashavtara.

Fascinated by this concept the artist was moved to represent the mythology on canvas.

Lachhman Rekha II

The work has been inspired by the well known incident in the epic Ramayana when the female protagonist, Sita is persuaded by the antagonist Ravana, to cross the line drawn by Lachhman, depicted by the arrow, thereby leading to the escalation of the epic to it's climax. The work also depicts the brave confrontation by the feeble Jatayu in an attempt to stop the kidnapping of Sita. The horse is representative of the infamous "apaharan". To the artist the crossing of the line by Sita is a point of inflection and has substantial social relevance even today.

The Harmony of Season's II
The work was inspired one lazy  afternoon in the  spring of Northern India. The flowering Mango tree outside the window was magical and captivating bringing the promise of the fruit, a food of the Gods . In such testing times, the Artist considers this work as  a talisman for  good news coming, a sign that things will go well in  life, and that one remain satisfied and happy. It also signifies the yearning for the joy of sheer freedom as depicted by the parrot in flight into the cool Indian summer night. Almost  mystical the tree is considered to be the symbol of love, wealth, fertility and even immortality. So great is the belief of the tree being auspicious that the leaves of Mango trees are used in Hindu wedding ceremonies in order to ensure a fertile union. The fruit of the tree appearing in a dream is believed, by some, to signify the arrival of  long awaited good news.

Trisul IV
Inspired by a visit to the cantonment mountain town of Ranikhet and the outstanding view of Trisul, a group of three Himalayan mountain peaks of western Kumaun, with the highest (Trisul I) reaching 7120 m. The three peaks resemble a trident or  in Sanskrit, Trishula- being the weapon  used by Lord Shiva to protect himself and his devotees from evil.

Kashi X
Varanasi derives its name from the two rivers that flank the city, the Varuna to the north and the Asi to the south. However, pilgrims refer to it as Kashi, first used three thousand years ago to describe the kingdom and the city outside which the Buddha preached his first sermon; the "City of Light" is also called Kashika, "the shining one", referring to the light of Shiva. Another epithet, Avimukta, meaning "Never Forsaken", refers to the city that Shiva never deserted. Also referred to as Rudravasa, the place where Shiva (Rudra) resides, Kashi's associations with Shiva extend to the beginning of time: legends relate how, after his marriage to Parvati, Shiva left his Himalyan abode and came to reside in Kashi with all the Gods in attendance. Temporarily banished during the rule of the great king Divodasa, Shiva ultimately returned to his rightful abode protected by his loyal attendants Kalabhairav and Dandapani. Over 350 gods and goddesses, including a protective ring of Ganeshaa form a mandala or sacred pattern with Shiva Vishwanatha at its centre.
